I knew Doug since we were 11 or so playing little league baseball, he was my quarterback ( I was the center ) at Norhwest jr. high - that always made for interesting stories later on!  Doug and 2 females ( 1 was a classmate  - no name please! ) was with me earlier in the night - when later my motel room ( the Magnolia Court )  burned out during our graduation trek  in June 1974. It took a loooog time for folks to stop ribbing me about that. The cause of the fire remains a mstery to all ( except for us 4 ) Doug, David Miles and I lived at Myrtle Beach for a few months after graduation - lots of stories there. We lived at the Safari Room, the old, old TOG and a few other bars from 1976 - 1979. Doug had a MG midget, I had a jeep, almost every Sunday, we rode around with the tops down ( the vehicles - not ours! - well, sometimes ours! ) carousing and drinking/whatever. Doug roomed with me on & off till 1984 or so.. He moved to Fl, got married for the 3rd time, had a boy and then had fallen on some hard times, but Doug was still just a gentle soul down deep. I last talked with him in the spring of 2006, we had had some major health problems - we swapped stories about that. He will be/is missed. R.I.P Douglas.

Doug and I became best of friends in the 2nd grade. We remained close throughout school . I remember that his mom would bring him over to my house every morning in jr high and 10h grade at hanes  and my mom would drive us to school.  We spent many  times together on the baseball field and basketball court.  We lost touch after high school--- which is a shame.  Since learning of this ,  a lot of good old memories have been churning in my head.  RIP  old  friend.  -----  Eddie  Cleveland

I don't know many girls that grew up in the Old Town/Northwest/North Forsyth area who didn't have a crush on Doug.  I haven't seen him since graduation night....the pool party at his neighbor's house (Andrea Hutchins)  oh my goodness..what a night.  Rest in Peace freind.

Sarah is so right! We all went to Oldtown together and every girl had  crush on Doug Smith! The nice thing was that he was as sweet as he was cute. His dad owned the Texaco a block from the school and Doug worked down there ... and of course, that's where I'd ask my mom to go! So Doug filled up our car and washed our windshield many times. I hadnt seen him since high school but I hope he's at peace.

Very sorry to hear Doug is gone. We were in different "groups" back then but Doug and I always said hello to each other when we passed in the halls. Doug transended all the groups back then and was a freind to all. Jock, intellect, redneck, partier, whatever, Doug liked everybody. I've thought of him a few times through all the years and wondered what he had been up to. Hope someone stayed in touch with him and can fill us in on his life.
