I will never forget Red, and in particular something that happened when we were at Hanes High School.

Hanes had three floors. My last class of the day, Spanish, was on first floor, facing the street. It was an old school with those big, tall windows.

One day, about 10 minutes before the last bell, we watched as Richard Newman went falling down from an upper floor window. He fell to the ground, got up and walked toward the buses.

My teacher, Mrs. Crowell, wanted to find out what happened, so she went to the window and started screaming for him. He walked up to the window and she said, "What happened? Did you fall out of the window? Are you all right?"

Red just looked at her and said, "I'm okay. I just wanted to get a good seat on the bus."

I just loved Richard. He was in chorus and he always kept things lively. He would occasionally bring his guitar to class and serenade us during free time. He loved to sing "Horse with no Name" and every time i hear that song, I think of Richard.
